In a wastewater treatment plant, what is the PRIMARY purpose of the activated sludge process?

Randy
Nice work! The activated sludge process uses a mixed culture of microorganisms - primarily bacteria - in an aeration basin to break down dissolved and suspended organic matter. The key is maintaining the right balance of food (BOD), microorganisms (MLSS), and oxygen. This drives biological oxygen demand removal before the water moves to secondary clarifiers. Remember: Return Activated Sludge (RAS) keeps the bug population healthy!
